Amelia
Alderson

"If there be no other definition of lying than an intention to deceive, withholding the truth, with such an intention, partakes as much of the nature of falsehood as direct lies; and that, therefore, lies are of two natures, active and passive."

Overview

This ability allows Amelia to read the mind of anyone alive, without exception.

Conditions

  • The target must be within 800 metres (half a mile) OR be in her direct line of sight.

  • Her understanding of other's thoughts is more precise if she understands their native tongue.

  • Her ability is always active, regardless of if she wants it to be.

  • Keeping one's mind blank or projecting nonsense prevents her from getting a clear read.

  • From the target's perspective, her ability is non-intrusive, there is no feeling or sensation connected to it.

Biography

At first glance, Amelia has a bubbly facade that makes her come across as incredibly friendly and carefree. A shameless (and almost reflexive) flirt, she's able to adjust her facade seamlessly to better connect to the person she's talking to. For this reason, it's difficult to know when she's being genuine and when she's playing a part. She keeps the degree of her intelligence and the core of her real personality far from the surface. Amelia reflects the way people view her: if someone immediately sees her as an enemy, she becomes their enemy but if they see her as a friend, she'll be their best friend.

Amelia is infamous within the Clock Tower for being extremely reckless and cavalier when it comes to procedures and orders. For these reasons (among a few others), she is rarely called to be in the same city as any of the other squires or Christie and most of her assignments are solo jobs.

Up until very recently, Amelia was living under one of Agatha Christie's compulsions preventing her from leaving the Clock Tower or betraying Christie in any way. This compulsion is now broken and Amelia no longer works for Christie.

Clock Tower

Agatha Christie

Amelia and Agatha have known each other for "way too long" (according to Amelia) since they attended the same boarding school as children. Because of her ability, she makes Christie mildly nervous and Amelia finds that entertaining. There is an undercurrent of tension to their relationship that neither woman does more than hint at during private conversations due to an incident that occurred between them when they were younger. Amelia is much more casual around Christie than most of the Clock Tower squires but always backs off before she pushes Christie too far. Amelia has no sense of loyalty to Christie.
Amelia's True Opinion: She hates Christie with every fiber of her being.

Aldous Huxley

Huxley is one of Amelia's favourite people and the first person she has ever fallen in love with. She finds him both relaxing and extremely entertaining to be around. Huxley's ability is one of the few things she has found that can quiet her own ability down.
Amelia's True Opinion: She loves Hux but is still slightly wary around him. There are times when she wonders if she's been sucked into the charisma of a cult leader or if her feelings are completely organic.
Nicknames: Hux

Bram Stoker

The pair have a vaguely combative relationship masked in cordiality. While they can get along long enough to conspire against other members of the Clock Tower, most of the time they're arguing.
Amelia's True Opinion: She finds the core of Stoker's personality grating and doesn't trust him at all. She might still be nursing a grudge from the incident where Stoker almost killed Huxley.
Nickname: Bram Bram

Dylan Thomas

She just really likes bothering Dylan and he makes it so easy. In Amelia's opinion, Dylan needs someone around to keep him from being too serious and she has bravely accepted that role.
Amelia's True Opinion: She finds Dylan ridiculously naive and thinks he's being played like a fiddle by Christie.
Nickname: Dyl

George Orwell

Another one of her favourite people and one she would consider a genuine friend. She thinks Orwell is one of the only fun people in the Clock Tower. As someone with an 'intrusive' and always active ability, Amelia adjusted to Orwell's rapidly and can often be spotted waving at any nearby camera to say hello. Orwell's involvement in helping to free her means more to her than she knows how to express.
Amelia's True Opinion: She loves them but hasn't quite gotten around to saying that out loud. Orwell is the first person Amelia has genuinely 100% trusted.
Nickname: Georgie

John Polidori

The pair get along extremely well as Polidori encourages all of Amelia's dangerous whims. She has fun around Polidori and enjoys learning more about his background. She openly considers him one of her favourite vampires.
Amelia's True Opinion: She's still making up her mind about Polidori but on the whole, she enjoys his company.
Nicknames: 'My Lovely Wedding Planner', lolli Poli

Mary Shelley

She's yet to decide how she feels about Shelley, though she's intrigued by the vague hints she's received about Shelley's ability. Amelia has fun talking in circles during their conversations (to Shelley's obvious annoyance). They may or may not be planning to start the zombie apocalypse.
Amelia's True Opinion: She hasn't made up her mind on Shelley, she thinks Shelley is dangerous.
Nicknames: Professor, Prof Shelley

Port Mafia

Akutagawa Ryuunosuke

She finds just about everything about Akutagawa hilarious. Despite being acutely aware that he's willing and ready to kill her at the drop of a hat (and despite having been severely injured by him more than once), Amelia literally cannot resist poking at him at every opportunity.
Nicknames: Mr. Rabid Dog, Mr. Tin Man

Higuchi Ichiyou

The two have an extremely combative relationship and Amelia has no reservations about playing dirty and dragging all of Higuchi's insecurities to light. She doesn't particularly care about Higuchi one way or the other but she finds it amusing how easy Higuchi is to rile up.
Nicknames: Blondie, Miss Authority

Kajii Motojirou

Kajii and Amelia get on a little too well and enable each other at every turn. She finds him incredibly fun to be around and enjoys indulging all of her reckless behaviour in his company. Amelia is also the president of the Kajii Motojirou Fanclub.
Amelia's True Opinion: She genuinely enjoys Kajii's company but she doesn't trust him.
Nicknames: Doc Brown

Kyusaku "Q" Yumeno

Amelia has only spoken with Q a handful of times but she's familiar with them by reputation and from overhearing their thoughts once before. She wishes Fyo-yo (@PetrovDefense) wasn't so protective of Q because she'd love to get to poke at them without restriction. They probably shouldn't be left alone together for the sake of everyone's sanity.
Amelia's True Opinion: She views Q as an up and coming player in the game and is paying careful attention to them as a result.
Nicknames: Little Dragon, Q-cumber

Armed Detective Agency

Dazai Osamu

She has no reservation teaming up with Dazai to pick on Fyo-yo and even less reservation in turning that attention around on Dazai. Having experienced No Longer Human, Amelia has no desire to experience it again.
Amelia's True Opinion: She is not a fan of Dazai and she presumes he's either lying or trying to manipulate something every time they speak.
Nickname: Lover Boy

Nakajima Atsushi

She enjoys talking to Atsushi largely because he's one of the most genuine people she's ever come across. Amelia has a lot of fun talking to him, and is often frank with Atsushi in ways that she isn't with people who would press her on her responses. She shares things with Atsushi that she doesn't share with anyone else and is always ready to help him when he needs it.
Amelia's True Opinion: She views Atsushi as a little brother.
Nickname: Sushi Roll

Tanizaki Naomi

The pair have a friendly relationship, although Amelia has told Naomi next to nothing about herself. She enjoys teasing Naomi.

Yosano Akiko

Originally, Amelia started chatting up Yosano in the interest of a casual fling but the more they talk the more she thinks there may be something a little less casual behind it.
Amelia's True Opinion: She's a little wary of Yosano simply because of how she finds herself being more honest around her than she is around 99% of people she knows.

Rats/DOA

Fyodor Dostoyevsky

@PetrovDefense

Their history goes back almost as far as Amelia and Agatha's due to Fyodor also attending the same boarding school as a teenager. At school, the two were borderline hostile to each other. However, since reconnecting in Yokohama, they've been able to get along much better (though they still snipe at each other when the opportunity arises). Along the way, their relationship shifted from something akin to casual truce to an actual friendship.
Amelia's True Opinion: She has conflicting emotions about him. On one hand, she's always found his genocidal inclinations ridiculous and his ideology just as silly. As his own goals shift, so does her opinion. She's always acutely aware of his capacity to be dangerous.
Nickname: Fyo-yo

@all0theism

She finds Fyodor interesting and can be fairly serious around him when the mood strikes. Amelia views him as both being able to see the true nature of humanity while also missing the point, but she entertains his god complex all the same.
Amelia's True Opinion: She thinks Fyodor is pretty full of himself and the god complex gets on her nerves.
Nicknames: Mr. Rat King, Mr. Prophet

The Guild

HP Lovecraft

Lovecraft ranks among the most interesting minds Amelia has ever overheard which automatically makes him someone she enjoys being around. Since Lovecraft isn't human, she warmed up to him sooner than she usually would with anyone else and is fond of him.
Amelia's True Opinion: She genuinely does enjoy Lovecraft's company. He gets bonus points for not being human.
Nickname: Mr. Sea God

Les Autres

Jean Genet

Are they friends? FWBs? Two women only connected by a mutual attraction to risking their life? Do they even know the answer to these questions? Probably not.
Amelia's True Opinion: She thinks Jean is absolutely unhinged and gets a twisted sort of enjoyment out of that.
Nickname: Miss Actress

Unaffiliated

Aleister Crowley

There are areas where Amelia and Aleister vibe perfectly and areas where they butt heads harshly but, overall, their dynamic is flirtatious and friendly. As a general rule, Amelia has decided to play nice with him since Hux likes him.
Amelia's True Opinion: Aleister's ability, and how casually he uses it, puts Amelia on edge. And any use of it directed at her is almost guaranteed to be met with underhanded payback.
Nickname: Ale Cat

Anne Rice

They met in a club and Amelia was not about to pass up an opportunity to sleep with someone that hot. As a duo the pair are mischievous and reckless, enabling each other at every turn. Somewhere along the way, they stumbled into accidental domesticity and a genuine relationship.
Amelia's True Opinion: She really enjoys Anne's company, though her comfort with their relative domesticity is largely contingent on her belief that Anne will grow bored of her and move on at some point.

Lucy Maud Montgomery

Familiar with the Lucy by virtue of being a Clock Tower spy, Amelia is endlessly curious about why Lucy stayed in Yokohama, much less decided to work under the ADA. She has appointed herself as Lucy's guide to having fun and wasting time.
Amelia's True Opinion: She thinks Lucy has a lot of potential and has decided to keep an eye on her.
Nickname: Lucy Goose

Mary Shelley

Amelia has taken on the solemn duty of introducing Mary to the exciting people she knows in the city. It's a little self-serving, but she's sure Mary will have fun along the way.
Amelia's True Opinion: Because of the way they met, she thinks Mary leaves herself wide open for manipulation and is a bit naive.
